Katy Jacks, Founder of Katy & Co: It's also okay to fail sometimes

Tuesday, 05 March 2019

I began my journey to entrepreneurship as a trainee florist straight from school.  I loved the work and immediately knew I wanted to have my own floristry business. After learning all I could about the industry I decided to take the plunge and buy the business I worked for at the age of 23 and I went on to win various awards including those for Customer Service, Young Entrepreneur of the Year and an everywoman award.

I soon decided that I wanted to concentrate on my two favourite aspects of floristry which are wedding and event flowers.  I sold the retail side of my business in 2016, kept my wedding and event customers and started Katy & Co from our new home. I'm now looking into passing on my floristry knowledge in a series of short courses for beginners which should be ready early 2019.

Katy’s Top Tips

  • Starting out I wish I had known that it's okay to do things differently, not the way they have always been done.  It's also okay to fail sometimes as long as you learn from it.
  • Entrepreneurship can feel lonely, but it doesn't have to be, there are so many fantastic online communities full of women ready to help you these days.
  • I received fantastic PR following winning and being a finalist for various awards and it has proved so valuable. I find it hard to talk about how wonderful my business is and push myself forward sometimes, so it's so helpful when PR does that job for you!
